Community Foundations Create Relief Funds to Help Those Impacted by Deadly Tornadoes

Community foundations in the Midwest are rallying to support residents impacted by a flurry of tornadoes that occurred over the weekend.

More than 130 tornadoes were reported to the National Weather Service (NWS) spanning across five states   – Nebraska, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas – leaving five dead, more than 100 injured, and thousands without electricity or shelter.

Donors who want to support those who were impacted by the storms are encouraged to support disaster response funds established by community foundations in the region.

Community foundations are trusted resources following disasters, connecting the resources of individual and corporate donors to carefully vetted nonprofits that deliver short-, intermediate, and long-term support to impacted communities.

The following community foundations have created funds in response to the recent tornadoes:

  • Omaha Community Foundation will use donations to partner with nonprofits to help individuals, families and businesses across Nebraska with immediate and long-term needs.

  • The Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines activated its disaster recovery fund to partner with disaster response and charitable organizations in Greater Des Moines to develop a collective strategy for giving during times of disaster.

Additional community foundation resources will be added to this page as they are confirmed.
