Celebrating Black Philanthropy and Beyond

Black Philanthropy Month 2024 may be over, but it’s not too late to recognize the often-overlooked contributions of Black donors who are making a difference in their communities.

This August, community foundations marked Black Philanthropy Month by shining a light on innovative philanthropists, dedicated donors and inspiring success stories that have historically been ignored.

Here are some ways that community foundations recognized and honored Black Philanthropy Month:

Amplifying Black voices
Black philanthropists are innovators, leaders, and trailblazers. Their stories and insights can inspire people from all walks of life.

Three Connecticut community foundations — Fairfield County's Community Foundation, The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven, Hartford Foundation for Public Giving — partnered with The Prosperity Foundation, to host an online forum in which leading Black Connecticut philanthropists discussed their commitment to social action.

Recognizing Difference-makers
The Cleveland Foundation’s Cleveland Black Futures Fund provides funding and fellowship opportunities to Black-led and Black-serving organizations.

In honor of Black Philanthropy Month, the foundation created a blog series that showcased the work and talent of recipients of the fund.

Bringing People Together

The Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee celebrated Black Philanthropy Month with an evening celebration recognizing 21 local leaders – considered as “gamechangers” by the foundation – who have made an impact in Black Philanthropy.

The month-long celebration also included a series of engaging conversations where community members were invited to listen to and share new ideas about giving and their role in shaping the future of philanthropy.

Ultimately, no matter how your organization chose to recognize Black Philanthropy Month, voices of the Black community were amplified, community members felt empowered, and Black culture and traditions are preserved.

Drop us a message and let us know how your organization celebrated the month. We’d love to hear from you!
